Jackie Gleason's Philosophical Pretzel: Do You Have It?

Jackie Gleason’s Philosophy of “It”

Jackie Gleason, the larger-than-life entertainer best known as Ralph Kramden from The Honeymooners, once delivered a quote so dazzlingly circular it could give a Möbius strip a nervous breakdown:

“If you have it and you know you have it, then you have it. If you have it and don’t know you have it, you don’t have it. If you don’t have it but you think you have it, then you have it.”

We’ll give you a moment to walk that around the block and let it stretch its legs. Go ahead—we’ll be here. Ready? As Gleason would say, “And awaaaay we go…”

At first blush, it sounds like Gleason just looped a bunch of “haves” and “thinks” together like a verbal cat’s cradle. But there’s actually some sparkly truth buried in there. What “it” is, exactly, isn’t spelled out. Charisma? Talent? Swagger? The ability to land a punchline or a perfect soufflé? Whatever it is, Gleason’s point is that confidence—or the illusion thereof—is 90% of the equation.

If you’ve got “it” and you know you’ve got it, you’re untouchable. You walk into the room, and people make way like Moses just parted the Red Carpet. But if you’ve got “it” and don’t know it? Well, then you don’t really own it. That’s like having a Ferrari in your garage and never learning to drive stick.

Now, here’s where Gleason really throws us a curveball: if you don’t have “it” but you think you do—guess what? You’ve got it. Because belief in yourself can be so contagious that everyone else starts to believe, too. Call it confidence, call it delusion, call it a TED Talk in the making—either way, it works.

So whether you’re chasing fame, fortune, or the last donut in the breakroom, remember Gleason’s Law of Existential Swagger: it’s not just about having “it”—it’s about knowing you do. Or at least faking it well enough to fool the room. That’s the sort of philosophy that allowed him to be wildly successful — whether as the star of a hit television show or as the penitent game show host who kept the audience in stitches while offering a half-hour apology for having presented a lousy program the week before.

Because when you’ve got “it,” as Gleason would say, “How sweet it is!”
