In March 2009 James Carroll Butler found that working with his co-worker, Michael Utz, was more than he could handle. Butler collected urine from the toilet and poured it into Utz’s coffee.
Fortunately, Utz noticed that his coffee smelled differently from its usual full-bodied aroma and arranged to have the coffee tested before he drank any of it.
Butler spent one month in a Virginia jail and served a year of probation for the offense, which he chalked up to “stress-related things going on in my life, on and off the job.”
Utz later sued Butler and received $1 in compensatory damages and $5,000 in punitive damages.
