The current 50-star flag of the United States was designed in 1958 by Robert G. Heft. He was a junior in high school and came up with the design as part of a project for his history class. He received a B- for his efforts.
One year later, after President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose the design upon the admission of Alaska to the union, Heft’s history teacher changed the grade on the assignment, giving him an A.

Robert G. Heft’s tombstone, recognizing his contribution as the designer of the 50-star flag of the United States.
