“White Christmas” — Unlikely and Timeless
A few years ago, we wrote about the surprising origin of “White Christmas” and its unlikely ascent to become the best-selling song of all time. Its origin story is such that there is no obvious reason this song should have become a Christmas classic at all.
Our friends at In the Shadow of Yesterday have added to the ever-growing lore about the popular Christmas song with the excellent piece, “The Timeless Magic of ‘White Christmas.’” It’s thoughtful, well-written, and more emotionally tuned to the song’s strange staying power than anything involving us pointing at the historical record and muttering, “This should not have happened.”
In other words: it’s worth your time, and it does what a good holiday essay should do—explain the magic without draining it completely from of the room.
Frankly, had we known that article was on the way, we might have spared ourselves the effort here and devoted our limited holiday energies to one of our true seasonal traditions: cataloging the surprisingly extensive list of felonies committed by Santa Claus.
Be sure to read it here: “The Timeless Magic of White Christmas”.
