Sewage and Strange Death
Monica Meyer, the mayor of Betterton, Maryland, died in 1980 while checking her townโs sewage tanks โ she fell in and drowned in 15 feet of human waste.
The life of a small-town mayor may seem carefree, if not glamorous: kissing babies, cutting ribbons, and, apparently, taking the plunge into the townโs sewage system. Thatโs how it played out for Monica Meyer, the mayor of Betterton, Maryland. She decided to personally inspect the townโs sewage tanks. Unfortunately, she took a misstep and ended up swimming with theโฆ well, letโs just say it wasnโt the dolphins. She drowned in 15 feet of human waste. An investigator at the scene remarked, โItโs just like putty, and she didnโt have a chance to get out. Itโs like quicksand.โย
Let this be a lesson to all aspiring politicians: sometimes, itโs best to delegateโespecially when it involves wading into literal yuckiness.
