Did Albert Einstein Fail Math? No—He Failed at Being a Model Student

At some point in nearly every student’s academic career, mathematics stops being a collection of friendly little numbers and becomes an organized conspiracy involving letters, parentheses, and a troublesome character named x who always needs help finding himself.

That is usually when some well-meaning adult offers one of history’s most comforting pieces of encouragement: “Don’t feel bad. Albert Einstein failed math.”

It is a wonderful story. It reassures struggling students that the boy who could not handle fractions eventually pulled himself together, developed the theories of relativity, and became the universal symbol for intelligence. Are you struggling to memorize the multiplication tables? Don’t despair. Today’s failed algebra test is merely the first stop on the road to a Nobel Prize.

There’s just one tiny problem with that story. Einstein never failed mathematics.

The Report Card That Looks Worse Than It Is

One of the most frequently shared pieces of evidence in the case against Young Albert is his 1896 school certificate.

The document contains several grades of 6, along with a scattering of 5s, 4s, and one unfortunate 3.

An American parent looking at the report card might wonder where the As, Bs, Cs, and Ds are listed. In the Swiss grading system used on the certificate, 6 was the highest possible grade and 1 was the lowest.

In other words, Einstein was not collecting academic distress signals. He was collecting the nineteenth-century Swiss equivalent of A’s.

The document is more properly called a Maturitätszeugnis, or certificate of maturity. It was issued by the Council of Education of the Canton of Aargau on October 3, 1896, after Einstein completed written and oral examinations in September.

Einstein was seventeen years old.

His grades were:

  • German language and literature: 5
  • French language and literature: 3
  • English language and literature: no grade recorded
  • Italian language and literature: 5
  • History: 6
  • Geography: 4
  • Algebra: 6
  • Geometry: 6
  • Descriptive geometry: 6
  • Physics: 6
  • Chemistry: 5
  • Natural history: 5
  • Art drawing: 4
  • Technical drawing: 4

The average of his thirteen recorded grades was exactly 5—officially classified as “good.” More importantly, Einstein received the highest possible grade in every major mathematical subject listed on the certificate.

Perhaps surprisingly, he received the highest grade in history as well. This complicates the convenient picture of Einstein as someone who could understand only equations and spent the rest of the school day staring dreamily out the window while someone attempted to explain Charlemagne.

Einstein’s Real Academic Nemesis Was French

The one genuinely poor grade on Einstein’s certificate was a 3 in French.

On the six-point grading scale, 4 was considered sufficient, which means Einstein’s 3 was genuinely below the passing level. It did not prevent him from earning his certificate, but French had clearly decided not to participate in the legend.

For part of his final examination, he had to write an essay in French titled “My Future Plans.” In it, the seventeen-year-old Einstein explained that he intended to study theoretical mathematics and physics because he possessed a natural inclination toward abstract and mathematical thought.

In other words, even while struggling with French grammar, Einstein used French to explain that he was very good at mathematics.

That is not the sort of evidence normally produced by a person who has spent years failing arithmetic.

It also gives us the refreshing image of the future architect of relativity sitting in an examination room, perfectly capable of describing his plans for unlocking the secrets of the universe but losing points because he may have placed an adjective on the wrong side of a noun.

The Examination Einstein Really Did Fail

Like many durable myths, the story that Einstein failed mathematics contains a small piece of truth that wandered away from home and fell in with bad company.

Einstein did fail an examination.

In 1895, when he was sixteen, he applied to the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zürich, the institution now known as ETH Zurich. Einstein wanted to enroll in the program that trained teachers in mathematics and physics.

There were two immediate difficulties. He did not have the required secondary-school diploma, and he had not reached the normal admission age of eighteen.

Ordinarily, either problem would have ended the application. Einstein, however, received special permission from Polytechnic director Albin Herzog, acting on the recommendation of Gustav Maier, a friend of the Einstein family.

The result was not quite the triumph he had hoped for.

The preserved ETH records show that Einstein earned his best results in mathematics and the natural sciences. His performance in linguistic and historical subjects, however, was judged inadequate. Because the test covered more than the subjects he cared about, his overall result was rated insufficient.

Einstein failed the entrance examination in roughly the same way someone might lose a decathlon after dominating the events he had actually intended to enter.

Even then, the faculty did not look at his scores and conclude that he lacked mathematical ability. Physics professor Friedrich Weber was impressed enough to invite him to attend his lectures. The school’s director advised Einstein to finish his secondary education at the Cantonal School in Aarau and then return with the proper credentials.

Einstein followed that advice. He spent the next year in Aarau, earned the certificate with all those supposedly dreadful 6s, and enrolled at the Polytechnic in 1896.

Thus, the real story is not that Einstein failed mathematics. He failed a broad entrance examination because his language and history scores were not strong enough to compensate for his exceptional performance in mathematics and science.

Admittedly, that version is less useful when attempting to comfort a child who has just scored 42 percent on a fractions test.

The School Einstein Hated

Einstein’s difficulties with education had less to do with intellectual ability than with his attitude toward the way schools operated.

As a boy in Munich, he attended the Luitpold Gymnasium, where instruction emphasized memorization, discipline, and obedience to authority. Einstein generally received good grades and was particularly outstanding in mathematics, but he disliked the school’s rigid atmosphere.

His more serious studies often took place at home, where he read books on mathematics, physics, and philosophy. At twelve, he became fascinated with Euclidean geometry. He later remembered being deeply impressed that mathematical propositions that were not immediately obvious could nevertheless be proved with absolute certainty.

This was apparently more appealing than memorizing whatever his teachers had assigned for Tuesday.

Einstein’s resistance to authority was not especially subtle. One teacher reportedly suggested that he leave because his presence was undermining the other students’ respect for the instructor.

It is difficult to know precisely what a fifteen-year-old must do to damage an entire classroom’s respect for a teacher merely by being present, but Einstein seems to have managed it without the assistance of social media.

He eventually left the Munich school before completing the program and joined his family in Italy. That departure may later have helped feed the impression that Einstein had been a failure at school. In reality, he was a capable student who had little patience for rote learning, compulsory obedience, or teachers who expected their conclusions to go unquestioned.

These are not necessarily ideal qualities in a secondary-school pupil. They are somewhat more useful when preparing to overturn centuries of assumptions about space and time.

Einstein’s real academic problem was never that he could not think. It was that he had very little interest in thinking the way everyone else expected him to. He was famously inclined to think outside the box—although, after his death, portions of Einstein’s brain spent decades being stored inside boxes, Mason jars, microscope-slide cases, and assorted other containers while scientists tried to determine what made it so unusual. Even genius, it seems, eventually encounters filing procedures.

Aarau: The School That Fit Einstein

The Cantonal School in Aarau offered Einstein a very different environment.

The school’s teachers encouraged independent thought rather than treating education as a prolonged military exercise involving chalkboards. The American Institute of Physics describes the teachers there as humane and credits the atmosphere with giving Einstein’s ideas room to develop.

Einstein flourished.

He broadened his general education, improved sufficiently in the subjects that had damaged his Polytechnic entrance-exam result, and continued to excel in mathematics and science. His French examination essay shows that he was already committed to studying theoretical mathematics and physics. During his year in Aarau, his thoughts also turned toward electromagnetism.

Aarau did not transform a hopeless student into a genius. It gave an already gifted student an educational setting better suited to the way he thought.

That distinction is important. The popular myth presents Einstein as proof that poor performance does not matter because hidden genius may eventually emerge. The real story is subtler: Einstein’s abilities had always been visible, but they did not always align neatly with the expectations of the institutions evaluating him.

He was excellent at subjects that interested him, indifferent toward some that did not, and openly resistant when authority demanded obedience without explanation.

Every school has had a student like that. Most of them do not later transform the way we see space and time.

How Ripley’s Helped Make the Myth Famous

By the 1930s, Einstein had become the most recognizable scientist in the world. His name was no longer merely the name of a physicist. It had become a synonym for genius.

That made the idea that Einstein had once failed mathematics irresistible.

In 1935, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! published an item with the headline: “Greatest Living Mathematician Failed in Mathematics.”

The headline was remarkably efficient. In only six words, it managed to get both Einstein’s academic history and his profession wrong. Einstein was a theoretical physicist, not the world’s greatest living mathematician, and he had never failed mathematics.

A rabbi in Princeton reportedly showed Einstein the clipping. Einstein laughed and replied, “I never failed in mathematics. Before I was fifteen I had mastered differential and integral calculus.”

This should have resolved the matter. The man whose childhood was being discussed personally denied the story, and his surviving academic records agreed with him.

Nevertheless, the myth survived. Facts are often remarkably helpless once a good motivational anecdote has entered the school system.

Einstein Was Still Not a Model Student

Correcting the myth does not require us to turn Einstein into a spotless academic machine who arrived early for every lecture, completed every assignment, and reminded the professor when homework had not been collected.

He did not.

At the Zürich Polytechnic, Einstein attended relatively few lectures and preferred to study independently. He was frustrated that some newer developments in physics—particularly the electromagnetic theory of James Clerk Maxwell—received little attention in his courses.

Instead of obediently limiting himself to the curriculum, he spent considerable time studying the subjects he believed mattered.

This approach worked better for Einstein than it would for most students, but it was not without consequences. The ETH archive records that he skipped a practical physics course so often that the administration reprimanded him. He received a 1, the lowest possible grade.

Here, at last, we have an authentic example of Einstein receiving a terrible academic mark.

It was not in mathematics. It was in a practical physics course he repeatedly failed to attend.

Einstein was therefore not bad at physics so much as unusually committed to exploring whether attendance policies were compatible with the fundamental laws of nature.

He completed his studies in 1900, but his professors were not eager to hire him. All four of the other graduates in his group obtained assistant positions at the Polytechnic. Einstein did not.

His ability was considerable. So was his talent for irritating the people responsible for recommending him.

Even Einstein Needed a Friend Who Took Notes

Einstein’s unconventional approach to university education would have been considerably more dangerous without his friend Marcel Grossmann.

Grossmann possessed several qualities that Einstein lacked, including regular attendance, orderly habits, and the ability to produce excellent lecture notes. Before examinations, Einstein borrowed Grossmann’s notebooks to catch up on material he had missed while pursuing his independent studies.

Einstein later admitted that he preferred not to speculate about what would have become of him without those notes.

Every genius, it seems, needs at least one friend who writes legibly and understands that material discussed in class may appear on the examination.

Grossmann later became a professor of mathematics and again proved invaluable. When Einstein was developing the general theory of relativity, he needed sophisticated mathematical tools involving curved geometry. Grossmann helped guide him into the relevant mathematics.

What Einstein’s Grades Really Prove

Einstein’s school record does not prove that grades are meaningless.

In fact, his grades identified his abilities rather accurately. He received the highest marks in mathematics and physics—the subjects in which he later transformed humanity’s understanding of the universe. His weaker grades appeared mostly in subjects that interested him less.

Nor does his story prove that every student who struggles in school is secretly a neglected genius. Sometimes a failed mathematics test means that the student needs more study, more help, or fewer opportunities to discover that the calculator on a telephone can also access social media.

What Einstein’s record does demonstrate is that intelligence, curiosity, discipline, obedience, and academic performance are not the same thing.

Einstein possessed intelligence and curiosity in extraordinary quantities. His discipline depended heavily on whether he considered the subject worth his attention. His obedience appears to have been available only by special order and was frequently out of stock.

He was not the hopeless child who failed mathematics and later shocked everyone by becoming a genius. He was a gifted, independent, sometimes exasperating student whose strengths were obvious long before he became famous.

Fortunately, the world already had plenty of obedient students. What it needed was someone willing to ignore the lesson plan and ask what would happen if he chased a beam of light.
