An earlier Commonplace post noted that the music of Britney Spears is one of the most effective deterrents to Somali pirates. Lest that be construed as some kind of derogatory judgment on the entertainer, we want to take this opportunity to give her equal time to show that she is more than an entertainer — she is also a world-class geography expert.

According to Ms. Spears:

• “I’ve never really wanted to go to Japan. Simply because I don’t like eating fish. And I know that’s very popular out there in Africa”
• “I would rather start out somewhere small, like London or England.”
• “The cool thing about being famous is traveling. I have always wanted to travel across seas, like to Canada and stuff.”

Hmmm…. On second thought, perhaps the real reason the pirates flee at the sound of her music is that they are terrified of the possibility that she might actually be on the ship.
