President Kennedy awarded a special gold medal to comedian Bob Hope in recognition of his services to the nation and the cause of world peace in a White House ceremony on September 11, 1963. The medal had been specially authorized by Congress.

Bob Hope (1903-2003) holds the world record for being the most-honored entertainer in history. He received more than 2,000 awards and citations for humanitarian and professional efforts, including five honorary Academy Awards, 44 honorary doctorates, and seven civilian medals. In 1997 the United States Congress recognized him as “Honorary Veteran of the United States Armed Forces.”

He also holds the world record for the longest running contract with a single network. His contract with NBC spanned 61 years, from 1936 to 1997.
