A Kiss on All Four Cheeks

Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle had a difficult relationship, at best. Churchill viewed the French general as a spoiled child who always demanded his own way. On one occasion Churchill was so offended by De Gaulle’s behavior that he vowed never to speak to him again. De Gaulle, realizing his mistake, came to Churchill’s residence to apologize. The Prime Minister did not want to see him, but his aides finally convinced him that he should receive the general and allow him to make amends.

Churchill, still unhappy, relented. He said, “Alright, alright. I’ll be good. I’ll be sweet. I’ll kiss him on both cheeks — all four, if you’d prefer it.”
