Why is ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ the Worst Christmas Song of All Time?

Type the words “worst Christmas song ever” into any search engine, and you are guaranteed to see “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney. Some critics have even gone so far as to label it the worst song ever recorded, Christmas or otherwise. A commentator for Golf Digest wrote, “‘Wonderful Christmastime’ is the most terrible song ever written by anyone, or anything, ever, including robots and gorillas and Puff Daddy and Courtney Love. No one likes ‘Wonderful Christmastime.’ No one. Paul McCartney hates it. All of Paul McCartney’s wives hate it. Santa thinks it’s a joke.”

Despite its baggage, the 1980 song earns McCartney in excess of $400,000 each year in royalties, placing his cumulative earnings from the number in excess of $20 million.

  2. Because of my job I hear lots and lots of holiday songs. All day long. The original version of this song is simply…awful – certainly awful enough to merit Sir Paul having his knighthood revoked, IMHO. But it’s not more awful than “Marshmallow World,” “Do they Know it’s Christmas,” “Santa Baby,” or that horrible spoken word thing by the Waitresses that for a long time I thought was a Bananrama song.
