Exploding head scene from the movie Scanners.

One of the coolest-sounding disorders is fortunately not nearly as serious as its name suggests. Exploding Head Syndrome is a condition that causes people to hear extremely loud noises โ€” a gunshot, an explosion, a thunderclap โ€” as they’re drifting off to sleep, or as they wake up from a deep sleep.

Such incidents are thought to be brought on by anxiety or extreme fatigue, and the condition is not associated with any physical ailment.

It is unrelated to the 1981 movie Scanners about people with psychic powers that can cause their adversaries’ heads to explode.

  1. I haven’t experienced this for years but I used to and I had no idea what it was, nice to see that I wasn’t completely insane
