Santa clearly knows who has been naughty and who has been nice, but what if he had the power to snap his fingers and wipe those on the Naughty List out of existence? With enough power and ability to visit billions of children every Christmas Eve, he never has seemed to need the assistance of any other powers — except for the time when he achieved near omnipotence by seizing nothing less than the Infinity Gauntlet.
That’s exactly what happened in the 1991 Marvel Comics Holiday Special. Santa, who was revealed to be “the most powerful mutant ever registered,” had a busier than usual Christmas that year. He turned the Brotherhood of Mutants into harmless toys, teleported the X-Men away, and wiped everyone’s memories.
As if all this weren’t enough, he also learned that his reindeer were Skrulls. With no time left to arrange alternate transportation, Santa asked to borrow the Infinity Gauntlet from the Illuminati so he could make his annual toy delivery on time. The idea may have had merit, but an unfortunate side effect of wearing the powerful device was that it drove him insane. In one of the more memorable scenes from the holiday special, Santa is pitted against an ensemble of earth’s mightiest heroes and defies them to reclaim the Gauntlet, saying, “Come and take it, you little girls!”
Ultimately, the Illuminati are able to reclaim the Infinity Gauntlet, and Santa is restored to sound mind. Still left without his reindeer, and with Christmas Eve upon him, Tony Stark comes to the rescue by loaning him robotic reindeer, which he just happened to have laying around. Santa is, therefore, able to deliver all the toys on time.
In terms of cosmic disasters, Santa’s use of the Infinity Gauntlet may not have measured up to the time Thanos wiped out half of all living things, but as far as Marvel fans are concerned, it was a Christmas to be remembered.
