Can You Spot the Non-Valedictorian Celebrity?
Itโs a big deal to be named valedictorian of the class. The title implies intelligence and a promising future.
The term โvaledictorianโ dates back to the late 14th century. It is derived from the Latin phrase “vale dicere,” which means “to say farewell.” Traditionally, the valedictorian is the student who has achieved the highest academic rank in his or her graduating class and is often tasked with delivering a farewell speech at graduation ceremonies. This role not only highlights their academic excellence but also symbolizes a pivotal moment of transition for the entire graduating class.
The practice of appointing a valedictorian began to gain popularity in the United States during the 19th century. Schools sought a way to honor outstanding students while also providing a meaningful conclusion to the educational journey. The valedictorianโs speech, a heartfelt farewell, serves as an inspiring send-off, encapsulating the experiences and memories shared throughout their time in school. This blend of recognition and celebration makes the valedictorian a cherished figure at graduation ceremonies.
Since valedictorians are expected to make something of their lives, it stands to reason that many of them have done just that. Many of those who have achieved success in their fields can trace their first big accomplishment to obtaining the title of valedictorian.
