The Bizarre Divorce Settlement in Cambodia
Divorce is never easy (unless you are in Saudi Arabia, where it can be done by text message). There are lawyers, paperwork, and endless debates over who gets the air fryer. But while most couples settle for the standard division of assets, one Cambodian couple decided to take a far more hands-on approach—by literally sawing their house in half.
Yes, that’s right. No legal jargon, no back-and-forth settlements. In one of the most unusual breakups, they simply took a good old-fashioned power saw and a commitment to making sure that neither ex got an inch more than their fair share.
A House Divided (By Hand, No Less)
The couple in question, Moeun Sarim and his wife Vat Navy, living in a rural village in Cambodia, had been married for nearly 40 years. But when their marriage hit the rocks, they didn’t just go their separate ways—they took their home with them. The husband, dissatisfied with how things were going, took matters into his own hands (and possibly a very sharp saw) and cut their wooden house in half.
According to local reports, he carefully removed his portion of the house—walls, roof, and all—and transported it to his parents’ property. Meanwhile, his ex-wife remained on the land where their house once stood, presumably wondering how on earth her life had turned into an episode of a home improvement show gone horribly wrong.
Extreme Divorce, DIY-Style
While most divorces involve splitting up the bank accounts, this was an extreme interpretation of asset division. There were no court-appointed mediators, no legal teams racking up billable hours—just a man with a mission, a saw, and possibly a strong sense of architectural ambition.
And let’s be honest—this might be the most efficient divorce settlement in history. No arguments over who keeps the house when the house itself is available in detachable segments. It’s like a divorce lawyer’s fever dream: “You want half? Fine. Here’s half.”
No Love Lost, No House Left
Neighbors were reportedly stunned by the spectacle, though one can imagine a certain level of admiration. After all, plenty of people have fantasized about dividing assets in a way that is both poetic and destructive. How many times has a divorcing couple glared at their jointly owned couch and wished they could just saw the thing in two?
This Cambodian couple did what others only joke about. Their approach to divorce was equal parts drastic and darkly brilliant. There’s something oddly satisfying about a breakup that is resolved with such finality—no lingering resentment, no drawn-out proceedings, just two halves of a home, going their separate ways.
Lessons in Love (and Lumberwork)
While we wouldn’t necessarily recommend this approach to others (real estate agents probably wouldn’t approve), there’s a certain logic to it. No prolonged legal battles. No months of passive-aggressive text messages. Just one clean break—literally.
In the end, this story is a testament to the lengths people will go to for closure. Some get therapy. Some write long, dramatic social media posts. And some? Well, they just grab a saw and get to work.
Just don’t try the same approach if you have a disagreement about who gets the kids.
