
There is a pretty good chance you have a collection of Margaret Knight’s legacy somewhere in your house.
It may be stuffed under the kitchen sink, wedged beside the refrigerator, or occupying an entire cabinet despite repeated promises that someday you will remember recycle them. They are paper bags: flat-bottomed, square enough to stand upright, roomy enough to hold groceries, lunches, takeout food, and approximately three times as many other paper bags as anyone actually needs.
The paper bag itself was not Margaret Knight’s invention. Paper bags already existed, and machines for making them had been patented before she entered the picture. What Knight did was solve a much more interesting problem: how to manufacture the vastly more useful flat-bottomed variety efficiently and automatically.
That alone would have earned her a respectable place in the history of American invention. Instead, her story acquired an additional complication when a man who had seen her machine tried to patent the idea himself and reportedly argued that Knight could not have invented it because women simply did not understand complicated machinery.
This was unfortunate for him because Margaret Knight understood complicated machinery very well.
She also kept notes.

The Paper Bag Before Margaret Knight
Before giving Knight credit for revolutionizing the paper bag, we should clear up one stubborn historical misconception: she did not invent the paper bag.

Francis Wolle, a Pennsylvania teacher and clergyman, received U.S. Patent No. 9,355 in 1852 for a machine that manufactured paper bags. His device represented an important step toward producing disposable bags mechanically rather than making them entirely by hand.
The problem was the shape. Early machine-made paper bags tended to resemble envelopes or narrow paper sacks. They could hold things, which admittedly is the minimum qualification normally expected of a bag, but they were not particularly convenient for groceries or bulky merchandise.
A flat-bottomed bag was much better. It could stand upright while someone filled it, offered more usable interior space, and was easier to pack and transport. Such bags could already be made by hand, but manually folding and pasting them was slow and expensive.
What was needed was a machine capable of doing all of that automatically.
Enter Margaret Knight.
Margaret Knight Was Tinkering Before Most Children Finished Recess
Margaret Eloise Knight was born on February 14, 1838, in York, Maine. Her father died while she was still young, and the family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire, where economic necessity sent Margaret into the textile mills at about age 12.

This was not the modern childhood experience in which a 12-year-old complains that the Wi-Fi signal is weak in the upstairs bedroom. Mid-19th-century textile mills were loud, dangerous industrial environments filled with moving machinery and staffed in part by children whose families needed the income.
Knight, however, had been mechanically inclined long before entering the mill. Accounts of her childhood describe her making kites, sleds, and toys and preferring tools and woodworking to the pursuits conventionally expected of girls. She also was fascinated by how machines worked.
The most famous story from this period concerns the dangerous flying shuttles used in textile looms. A shuttle could break loose and shoot from the machinery, potentially injuring workers. After witnessing or learning of such an accident, the young Knight reportedly devised a mechanism that would stop the machine when something went wrong.
The details of that first invention have been lost, and Knight never patented it. Later accounts said versions of the safety device came into use in mills, but because she was a child who knew nothing about patent law, she received neither legal protection nor payment.
Apparently she took that lesson to heart.
Years later, when someone tried to claim one of her inventions as his own, Margaret Knight arrived considerably better prepared.
A Better Paper Bag Was Hiding in Plain Sight
By the 1860s, Knight had moved to Massachusetts and was working at the Columbia Paper Bag Company in Springfield. There she encountered the laborious process used to produce flat-bottomed bags by hand.
Knight watched the folding and gluing and reached the conclusion that has launched a surprising number of inventions throughout history: surely there has to be a better way to do this.
That same instinct drove Josephine Cochrane to develop a practical mechanical dishwasher. It was also responsible for countless inventions whose creators looked at a tedious human task and decided that machinery ought to be suffering instead.
Knight began experimenting with a machine that could take paper from a roll and perform the necessary cutting, folding, and forming operations automatically. The difficult part was creating the bottom. Paper had to be guided and folded in a precise sequence so the finished product would open into the familiar flat or satchel-bottom shape.
It sounds obvious after someone has shown you how to do it. So does a zipper.
That is one of the occupational hazards of being an inventor. If you succeed spectacularly, later generations may look at your invention and wonder why it was ever difficult.
The Machine That Made the Modern Paper Bag Possible
Knight spent more than two years developing her machine. She first constructed a wooden prototype and eventually needed a metal working model for the patent process.
The resulting mechanism was no glorified origami table. Knight designed a complicated system of gears, knives, rollers, folders, and guides that coordinated the movement of paper through the machine and formed the folds required for a flat-bottomed bag.
Her eventual 1871 patent describes the invention in considerable mechanical detail. The document identifies the finished product as a “flat or Satchel-bottom” bag and includes drawings showing both the machine and the sequence of folds it created.
One of Knight’s machines could perform work that otherwise required about 30 people. More importantly, it meant flat-bottomed bags could be manufactured rapidly and consistently on an industrial scale.
The ordinary grocery sack was on its way to becoming ordinary.
Then Charles Annan Had an Idea
Along came Charles Annan, who had a brilliant idea.
Inconveniently for Annan, Margaret Knight had the idea first.
Knight arranged to have a metal version of her machine constructed in a machine shop. While that work was underway, Charles Annan, a machinist who had access to the shop, saw the design.
Annan subsequently filed his own patent application for a substantially similar paper-bag machine.
When Knight learned what had happened, she initiated what was known as a patent interference proceeding. At the time, when competing applicants claimed the same invention, the Patent Office could conduct a proceeding to determine who had actually invented it first.
Patent law may not ordinarily seem like the ideal setting for narrative suspense, but every profession deserves its moment.
Knight now had to prove that the machine Annan claimed as his own had actually originated with her.
Margaret Knight Brings the Receipts
Knight came prepared with an impressive body of evidence. She produced drawings, notes, diary entries, models, and witnesses familiar with the development of her machine.
She could show not merely that she knew about the invention but how she had developed it over time. The evidence documented the progression from concept to prototype to working machinery.
Annan had a problem.

Popular accounts of the case say he argued that Knight could not possibly have designed such complicated machinery because she was a woman. The Smithsonian reports the substance of that argument as part of the dispute, as does the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
It is worth being cautious with the wonderfully convenient direct quotations that have accumulated around the story over the years. Historical anecdotes tend to improve conversationally with age. Still, the underlying point is well supported: Annan tried to use Knight’s sex as part of his argument against her claim to the machine.
Knight responded in the most devastating way possible.
She explained the machinery.
In detail.
Then she produced the drawings showing how she had designed it.
There are times when discrimination is defeated by a landmark statute, a soaring judicial opinion, or a profound change in public attitudes. There are also times when it is defeated by a woman opening a folder and saying, in effect, “Here are my schematics.”
U.S. Patent No. 116,842 Goes to Margaret E. Knight
Knight won the interference proceeding, and on July 11, 1871, the United States issued Patent No. 116,842 for an “Improvement in Paper-Bag Machines” to Margaret E. Knight.
The patent itself is a useful corrective to the shorthand description of Knight as “the woman who invented the paper bag.” Her language was more precise. She claimed specific mechanisms involved in forming the folds necessary for a flat-bottomed bag.
That distinction does not diminish her achievement. It makes it more impressive.
Inventors rarely create something from a state of absolute nothingness. More often, they inherit an existing technology, identify the part that does not work well enough, and devise the improvement that makes the whole thing practical. Knight did not need to invent the concept of putting merchandise inside paper. Humanity had already cleared that intellectual hurdle.
She figured out how to manufacture a much better bag efficiently.
The Patent Model You Usually See Is Not Her Original Machine
There is another small historical wrinkle worth mentioning because it illustrates how easily even accurate stories become simplified.

The handsome wooden-and-metal Margaret Knight paper-bag machine frequently pictured in museums and articles is generally not the model associated with her famous 1871 patent dispute. It is a later patent model for an improved machine.
In 1879, Knight received Patent No. 220,925 for another improvement in paper-bag machinery. The specification expressly refers back to her 1871 invention.
That 1879 model survives in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History collection. Made of wood and metal, it demonstrates machinery for folding and pasting flat-bottomed bags and offers a wonderfully tangible reminder that Knight’s work involved genuine industrial engineering rather than merely coming up with a clever shape for a lunch sack.
History loves an iconic photograph. Unfortunately, it occasionally assigns the right caption to the wrong generation of machine.
Margaret Knight Was Not a One-Bag Wonder
If the paper-bag machine had been Knight’s only important invention, it would have been enough to secure her place in technological history.
It was nowhere close to being her only invention.
The National Inventors Hall of Fame credits Knight with at least 26 patents, with her work ranging from paper bags and shoe-manufacturing machinery to window frames and rotary engines.
In other words, she did not spend the remainder of her career trying to come up with increasingly elaborate ways to fold lunch containers.
This breadth makes her a particularly interesting companion to other inventors we have examined at Commonplace Fun Facts. Garrett Morgan jumped from sewing equipment to hair-care products, breathing devices, and traffic signals. Knight likewise possessed the kind of restless mechanical mind that saw no reason an inventor should stay politely within one industry.
Some later writers called her the “Lady Edison,” a title intended as a compliment. It nevertheless carries the faint implication that the most convenient way to describe a brilliant female inventor is to identify the male inventor whose achievement provides the appropriate unit of measurement.
Thomas Edison, for the record, is almost never called the “Gentleman Margaret Knight.”
The Patent System Actually Worked for Her
There is an interesting legal aspect to Knight’s story that can get lost when it is reduced to a simple tale of a male patent thief and a female genius.
The patent system ultimately did what it was supposed to do.
Knight faced obvious disadvantages. She was a woman with limited formal education operating in an industrial world overwhelmingly controlled by men. Her opponent challenged her authorship. Yet the legal proceeding allowed her to present documentary and testimonial evidence establishing that she had developed the machine first.
The Patent Office ruled in her favor.
For anyone accustomed to hearing patent stories in which paperwork creates the problem rather than solving it, this is almost disorienting. We have previously encountered patents whose drafting errors created their own forms of historical entertainment, as well as inventions affected by the very different complications of the Invention Secrecy Act.
Knight’s case offers the less flashy but important opposite lesson: documentation matters. Drawings matter. Dates matter. Keeping records while developing an invention matters.
When someone else tried to claim her work, Margaret Knight did not merely insist that everyone knew the idea was hers.
She proved it.
She Learned the Patent Lesson Better Than James Dewar Did
Knight’s experience also makes an interesting contrast with another inventor whose work became part of everyday life.
As we have previously discussed in the story of James Dewar and the invention that became the Thermos, Dewar developed the vacuum flask but did not secure the commercial patent position that might have allowed him to profit substantially from its later consumer success.
Knight learned almost the opposite lesson. Her childhood safety device apparently brought her no compensation because she had not patented it. When the paper-bag machine came along, she sought legal protection—and when that protection was threatened, she fought for it.
The difference between “inventor” and “person who gets paid for the invention” has always involved a surprising amount of paperwork.
Why Margaret Knight Matters More Than the Paper Bag
It would be easy to frame Knight’s significance entirely around the ubiquity of the flat-bottomed paper bag. Her machine helped make an enormously useful form of packaging practical for mass production, and descendants of the concept remain familiar today.

But the more interesting story is how she approached problems.
At the textile mill, she saw dangerous machinery and thought about how it could be made safer. At the paper-bag factory, she watched an inefficient manual process and imagined how a machine could duplicate it. When a rival claimed her design, she understood that inventing the mechanism was not enough; she also had to document and defend ownership of it.
This is closer to what invention usually looks like than the popular image of a lone genius suddenly leaping from a bathtub and shouting something memorable.
Innovation is frequently incremental, frustrating, mechanical, and buried beneath years of tinkering. Someone notices an irritation everybody else has accepted as normal and refuses to leave it alone.
Knight’s genius was not that she looked at a paper bag and envisioned something nobody had ever seen.
She looked at the process and saw that it could work better.
The Trouble With Successful Everyday Inventions
There is a peculiar injustice built into inventions that become too successful.
The more completely they become part of everyday life, the less remarkable they seem. A flat-bottomed paper bag does not announce itself as advanced 19th-century engineering. It sits on the grocery counter waiting for someone to put canned tomatoes in it.
The same thing happens with buttons, zippers, safety pins, dishwasher racks, windshield wipers, and thousands of other devices. Once the design becomes familiar, we mentally demote it from “invention” to “object.”
That makes Margaret Knight exactly the sort of inventor worth remembering.
She was not famous because she built a gigantic machine that dazzled crowds at a world’s fair or developed a technology that visibly changed the skyline. She improved something mundane so effectively that the improved version became the form everyone regarded as normal.
There may be no greater compliment to an inventor, although it does create certain difficulties when future generations are asked to name her.
The Woman Behind the Bag
Margaret Knight died in 1914, after a lifetime spent designing machinery across a remarkable range of industries. She never became enormously wealthy, despite the usefulness of her inventions, and today her name remains far less familiar than Edison, Bell, Ford, or many of the other figures routinely summoned whenever American ingenuity needs a group photograph.
That imbalance is gradually being corrected. Knight was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006. Her original 1871 patent records are preserved by the National Archives and Records Administration, while the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History holds the patent model for her improved 1879 paper-bag machine.
Her most familiar monument, however, is considerably less ceremonial.
It is the bag holding your groceries.
Margaret Knight did not invent paper bags. She did something arguably more interesting: she looked at an ordinary product, figured out why it was not good enough, invented complicated machinery to make a better version efficiently, and then successfully defended her right to be recognized for doing it.
The next time you pull a flat-bottomed paper bag from the kitchen cabinet, spare a thought for the woman who helped make that unremarkable object unremarkable.
Then put the bag back with the other 46. You know perfectly well you are not throwing any of them away.
