If you pay close attention, you will find the code “A113” appearing almost everywhere you look in entertainment. Is it some secret message for or from the Illuminati? Could it be evidence of extraterrestrial life? Is it just one more conspiracy theory that should worry you?

Actually, the answer is much simpler and less threatening. A113 (sometimes A-113 or A1-13) is an inside joke that originated with alumni of California Institute of the Arts, such as John Lasseter, Tim Burton, and Brad Bird. The classroom where these students learned graphic design was identified as Room A113.

A113 first appeared in media when Bird used it for a license plate number in the “Family Dog” episode of Amazing Stories. Since then, it has shown up in many different movies, television shows, and other media, including every Pixar film.
