Have you ever wished for instant clothing — the kind where you can just push a button and make something appear? If so, your wish may be very close to being granted. Scientists have developed instant clothing in a can: just spray it on, and you’re ready to go!

This miracle breakthrough was developed by British scientists at Imperial College London. Fabrican lets you spray clothes directly onto your body from an aerosol can. The spray forms a thin layer of fabric. Once it dries, it can be peeled off, washed and worn again.

“When I first began this project I really wanted to make a futuristic, seamless, quick and comfortable material,” says Manel Torres, one of the creators of the material. “In my quest to produce this kind of fabric, I ended up returning to the principles of the earliest textiles such as felt, which were also produced by taking fibers and finding a way of binding them together without having to weave or stitch them.”

In addition to coming in many colors, the spray-on fabric can also come in different types of fibers ranging from natural to the synthetic. Fabrican says the technology is not just for fashion but can have some innovative use in medicine to layer bandages on the skin without disturbing the wound.

Fabrican is still in the prototype stage, but developers hope to make it available for consumer use soon.
