W.C. Fields it ain’t what they call you

There are some people who take offense at the mildest insult. Call them a name, and they’ll nurse that grudge like it’s a wounded pigeon. But then there are those legendary few who, when confronted with name-calling, just keep on walking like they didn’t even hear it — probably because they didn’t answer to it. And that’s where W.C. Fields comes in with a mic drop for the ages:

“It ain’t what they call you, it’s what you answer to.”

Truer words were never grumbled through a cigar. Fields, the master of the curmudgeonly one-liner, understood the secret to dignity and self-respect — don’t waste time arguing with someone who doesn’t even know your mailing address, let alone your worth.

It’s a timeless reminder that no matter what labels people slap on you — weirdo, dreamer, muggle, or even “that guy who brings tuna to the office microwave” — those words only stick if you let them. What you choose to respond to says more about you than what anyone else blurts out in a moment of irritation or ignorance.

So next time someone tries to call you something less than kind, channel your inner W.C. Fields. Tip your metaphorical bowler hat, mutter something unintelligible, and keep strutting. Because what you answer to? That’s entirely up to you.

    1. Thanks. Fields is one of those true geniuses of that era. It still causes me grief at the deepest levels to know that he was considered one of the most skilled jugglers of all time, yet there are no surviving video recordings of any of his juggling performances. His radio feud with Charlie McCarthy ranks up there with Jack Benny vs Fred Allen in terms of the all-time greats.

      1. Pieces like this and your comments remind me of my belief that we’re definitely getting the short end of the cultural stick. That era seemed overflowing with wit and genius, and we have, well, whatever it is that we have today.
