It’s a beautiful day for a stroll through nature. You marvel at the exquisite diversity of Creation as your eyes feast upon the sights all kinds of flora and fauna. Nothing could spoil this priceless moment.
Nothing, that is, until you see the cold, discolored corpse-like fingers protruding from under a log. The unmistakeable shape can only be one thing: some poor soul was buried alive. With his last gasp managed to break through the soil, leaving his rotting digits as the only marker for his grave.
Or maybe it’s just a fungus.
Xylaria polymorpha, commonly known as Dead Man’s Fingers, is one of nature’s creepiest thingamawoogits. It is a mushroom-like fungal growth generally found around decaying wood, trees, or shrubs.

Dead Man’s Fingers is one of the best nicknames in nature. Despite its appearance, the fungus is more magical than macabre. Thriving on decaying plant material, it’s nature’s own recycler. Xylaria polymorphic plays a vital role in breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil. It looks ghastly, but it serves as the forest’s lean-up crew.
Beyond its ecological contributions, some cultures have used the fungus in traditional medicine, highlighting its potential health benefits. Given its appearance, it seems well suited for mad scientists, but even those who accept your insurance have found use for it.
Keep your eyes open next time you are walking through the woods. Those creepy fingers reaching out from under a fallen tree may be one of nature’s marvels.
Then again, they could actually be fingers. Either way, you should probably take a closer look.

The actual holder of that title is likely a mushroom of the species Armillaria ostoyae in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon. It covers 2,200 acres and is between…

This Tree Is So Deadly That You Can’t Even Stand Near It Without Danger
Joyce Kilmer wrote, “I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree…” Kilmer intended to express the beauty and serenity embodied by trees. If Kilmer’s inspiration had come from the manchineel tree, however, the poem would have taken a decidedly darker turn. The manchineel tree is something that would seem…
